belonging to or typical of the middle class
(= a social group between the rich and the poor)
especially in supporting existing customs and values,
or in having a strong interest in money and possessions.

If you describe people, their way of life, or their attitudes
as bourgeois, you disapprove of them because
you consider them typical of conventional middle-class people.

Marxists use bourgeois when referring to the capitalist system
and to the social class that owns most of the wealth in that system.

reading aloud to someone is “a miraculous alchemy…
that converts the ordinary stuff of life –
a book, a voice, a place to sit, a bit of time –
into astonishing fuel for the heart, the mind, and the imagination.”
・・Reading a news article out loud can be a great way to stimulate
a discussion or a debate. Reading a novel out loud can calm
an anxious listener by engaging their imagination.

improved verbal communication with the nursing staff
Reading aloud, whether to someone else or even to oneself,
activates the frontal cortex and may have a role in helping
to rehabilitate the cognitive functions of Alzheimer patients.

My favorite comedian is a man named George Carlin. His style of comedy would probably not be understood by Japanese people, but it’s a very typical style in the US. He was born in the 1930’s and reached very high levels of fame in the 1970’s. He continued to work as a standup comedian, actor, TV host, and author until his death in 2008.

In the US, everyone knows the name George Carlin. I think that even young people who never saw him perform when he was alive must know his name. And if they don’t know his name, they definitely know his voice. Some of his comedy routines are so famous that everybody knows them. However, some people don’t like him. This is because his comedy satirizes modern American culture and criticizes religion and politics. So people who respect certain politicians or who are very religious probably dislike George Carlin.

His kind of humor is what I would call ranting. Basically, when he is on stage he talks about everything he hates in the world. He hates war, politics, business, religion, and many other things. It may not seem like comedy, but in the US there are many comedians like this and it takes a lot of skill and intelligence to be able to talk about such serious matters while making people laugh. I suppose that this kind of humor would never be popular in Japan because here people don’t like to talk about sensitive topics publicly and they don’t like criticism.

But George Carlin wasn’t just an angry person who complained a lot. He was a real professional performer. When he was a young man he did was trained as a professional stage actor and he worked in small theaters across the country. And some of the most famous and well-respected shows in American history chose him to host, or they had him come as a guest many times. For example, Saturday Night Live is perhaps the most famous comedy skit show in the country, with many of the most famous comedians getting famous on this show. George Carlin was the host of the first show in 1975. And Johnny Carson is perhaps the most famous talk show host in history - and when he was sick, George Carlin would take his place. Looking at his comedy, you may think he’s crazy, but he was really respected and skillful.
